Short answer
AI search means asking an AI tool, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI answers, a full question and getting a written answer instead of a list of links. These tools build their answers from information they can find and read on the web. A business with clear, consistent facts on its website, its Google Business Profile and other trusted pages is easier for them to find, understand and mention. Nobody can guarantee a mention, but you can make your facts easy to use.
Key takeaways
- AI tools answer from what they can read: your website, your Google listing, directories and reviews.
- Write clear facts: services, prices, area, hours and contact details.
- Do not block AI search crawlers in your website settings.
- Nobody can promise an AI mention. Be wary of anyone who guarantees one.
What AI search is
On a normal Google search, people get a list of links and choose one. With AI search, they ask a full question, like 'Which bridal makeup artist in Lahore does home visits?', and the tool writes an answer. Often it names a few businesses and links to the pages it used.
Common AI search tools include ChatGPT (with web search), Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode), Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.
You may also hear the terms AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation). Both mean the same practical thing: making your business easy for these tools to find, understand and quote.
How AI tools decide what to say
AI tools do not know your business personally. They rely on information they can find and read, such as:
- Your website: what you do, where, for whom, your prices and your timings
- Your Google Business Profile and other map listings
- Reviews and mentions on other websites, directories and social pages
- Search engine results, which many AI tools check in the background to find fresh pages
When your facts are clear and the same everywhere, a tool can repeat them with confidence. When they are missing or contradict each other, it may skip you, or get your details wrong.
8 steps to make your business easier for AI to find
Step 1: Make sure your website can be read
It should load quickly, work well on phones and show its text as real text, not only inside images. Check that your robots.txt file does not block search and AI crawlers, such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot (used by ChatGPT search) and PerplexityBot.
Step 2: Say exactly what you do, and where
Use plain sentences like 'We are a dental clinic in Gulberg, Lahore, open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm.' Name your services, the areas you serve and who you help.
Step 3: Answer the questions customers ask
Add a FAQ with real questions in your customers' own words, each with a short, direct answer first: prices, timings, parking, home service, payment methods.
Step 4: Show prices, or 'from' prices
People ask AI tools how much things cost. A clear starting price is easier to quote than 'call for price'.
Step 5: Keep your details the same everywhere
Use the same business name, address, phone number and hours on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram and directories.
Step 6: Complete your Google Business Profile
Many AI answers about local businesses draw on map listings. Our Google Maps guide walks you through it step by step.
Step 7: Earn honest reviews and mentions
Ask happy customers for reviews, and get listed on trusted local directories and in associations you belong to. Mentions on other sites help show that you are real and active.
Step 8: Add structured data
Structured data (schema markup) is code on your pages that labels facts like your business type, address, hours and FAQs in a format search engines understand. It does not guarantee a special listing, but it removes guesswork.
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a newer, proposed file that sits on your website (at yoursite.com/llms.txt). It gives AI tools a short, plain summary of your business and links to your most useful pages.
It is simple to add, but not every AI tool reads it yet. Treat it as a helpful extra, not a guarantee.
How to check if AI tools mention you
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask, such as 'best [your service] in [your area]' or '[your service] near [a landmark] open on Sunday'.
- Note which businesses are named, and which websites are linked as sources.
- Ask about your business by name. If a fact is wrong, find where it might come from (an old listing, a directory, your own website) and correct it there.
- Check again every few months. Answers change as the tools update.
Look for patterns, not one answer
AI answers can change from one person to another and from one day to the next. Ask several questions, more than once, before you draw conclusions.
Be careful with promises
No one controls what an AI tool says. Be wary of anyone who guarantees that ChatGPT or Google will recommend you, and stay away from tricks like hidden text or fake reviews: search engines treat them as spam, and they can get your website or profile penalised.
What works is slow and honest: clear facts, a useful website, a complete Google profile and real reviews.
How Site33 helps
Every Site33 plan includes the AI search basics: an llms.txt file, AI crawler access settings, FAQ schema and business schema with your social profile links.
Bigger plans add question-style headings with short direct answers, the same name, address and phone everywhere, and on Professional, Booking and Shop Plus, a quarterly check of whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your business. For ongoing work there is a monthly AEO / GEO add-on (Rs 4,999 a month). Compare what each plan includes.
Common questions
Is AI search replacing Google?
Not replacing, adding to it. People still search on Google, and Google itself now shows AI answers for some searches. A business that is easy to find on Google is usually in a good position for AI search too.
Do I need a website to show up in AI answers?
Not always: AI tools can mention a business from its Google listing or from directories. But a website is the one source you fully control, and it gives AI tools the details they need, such as services, prices, area and timings.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
There is no fixed time. Search engines and AI tools update at different speeds, and some answers rely on information that is months old. Get your facts right everywhere, then check again every few months.
Should I block AI bots from my website?
If you want AI search tools to find and mention your business, do not block their search crawlers. Some companies run separate crawlers for search and for training their models: for example, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot (search) and GPTBot (training) separately, so you can choose for each.
