Dengue season: warning signs that need a doctor today
Most dengue fever gets better with rest and fluids. These signs mean you should not wait at home.
By Dr. Sana Malik, City Care Clinic (demo)
Every year after the monsoon, dengue cases rise in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Most people get better with rest, fluids and paracetamol on a doctor's advice. A few people get worse around the time the fever goes down, usually on day 3 to 7.
See a doctor the same day if you notice
- Strong pain in the stomach
- Vomiting again and again
- Bleeding from the gums or nose, or blood in vomit or stool
- Feeling very weak, drowsy or restless
- Fast breathing, or cold and clammy hands and feet
At home
Drink plenty of water, ORS and fresh juices. Rest. Do not take pain killers like ibuprofen or aspirin unless a doctor tells you to, because they can raise the risk of bleeding.
Prevention
Empty standing water in pots, coolers and tyres every few days, use mosquito repellent and nets, and wear full sleeves in the morning and evening.
